Hot Yoga in Calgary: The Story Behind Pure Hot Yoga

Women Practicing yoga in Pure Hot Yoga Stuido

The first class is the hardest one.

Almost everyone who walks into Pure Hot Yoga for the first time says some version of it: I'm not flexible enough. I'm not fit enough. It's going to be too hot. We know, because we've heard it hundreds of times. And then, usually within just a few classes, those same people are protecting that spot on their calendar like it's the most important appointment they have.

This is the story of how Pure Hot Yoga became a place like that, and the woman who built it.

Kristine Murphy From Pure Hot Yoga

Kristine's Story: How Hot Yoga Changed Everything

“My yoga journey began in 2000, more than 25 years ago, though I never imagined I'd try it. After 20 years of high-level tennis left my body depleted, hot yoga gave me something I didn't know I needed: relief, flexibility, and a deep sense of restoration.

I committed to the practice long before I understood its emotional depth, until 2009, when personal tragedy left me feeling lost, and yoga became essential for my mind and heart. That experience is the foundation of everything we do at Pure Hot Yoga.”

Kristine, Founder of Pure Hot Yoga

Why Kristine Opened a Hot Yoga Studio in SW Calgary

“As a student, I noticed that none of the yoga studios I visited knew my name or my story. I founded Pure Hot Yoga in SW Calgary to be different: a yoga studio where everyone, regardless of background or circumstance, feels safe, supported, and genuinely welcome.

Our Springborough community is a place to move, to laugh, to cry, to grow, and to create lasting memories. Pure exists to share the practice that saved me.”

What Kristine wanted wasn't just another place to sweat. She wanted a studio where people feel welcome the moment they walk in, where nobody is performing, and where a practice can change with you. That idea is why the word "Pure" is on the door. Pure Hot Yoga is a hot and warm yoga studio in Springborough, SW Calgary, built on that idea.

What Makes Pure Different From Other Calgary Hot Yoga Studios

Calgary has some wonderful yoga options, and we're glad. But when students tell us why they stay at Pure, they rarely start with the temperature. They talk about community.

  • You're known here. Teachers learn your name, notice when you've been away, and cheer when you come back.

  • It's yours to shape. Whether you want a strong sweat or a slow stretch, every class invites you to take what your body needs that day.

  • It's for every level. First-timers practise beside people who've been on the mat for years, and nobody is keeping score.

Hot, Warm, or Slow: Find the Class That Fits

Not sure where to begin? Here's how we think about it.

Hot classes (about 37-40°C) are for when you want to work, sweat, and feel strong.

  • Pure Flo is a flowing, heated practice that builds strength and focus.

  • Pure Traditional is a classic 26-posture hot yoga class, the same sequence every time, so you can see your progress.

Warm classes (about 30-34°C) give you the benefits of heat with a bit more breathing room. And don’t worry, you’ll still expect a lot of sweat.

  • Pure Sculpt, Pure Core, and Pilates combine yoga with strength-focused movement.

  • Warm Hips is a deep, steady stretch for tight hips and lower backs.

Slow classes are for restoring.

  • Pure Yin and Yin & Yoga Nidra use long holds and guided rest to quiet your nervous system.

Hot Yoga for Beginners: What Your First Class Feels Like

If you've never tried hot yoga, here's what to expect at Pure.

  1. Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early to check in, meet your teacher, and settle in and adjust to the heat.

  2. Bring water, a yoga mat, a towel, and light clothing. (Rentals available if you forget)

  3. The room is warm, and you'll sweat. That's normal. Move at your own pace.

  4. You can rest whenever you need to. Child's pose is always an option, and nobody will blink.

  5. Don't judge your first class. Most students say their body feels different by the second or third visit.

If you have a health condition or are pregnant, check with your doctor first and tell your teacher before class.

More Than Yoga: Community, Training, and Giving Back

What happens at Pure Hot Yoga doesn't stop at the end of class.

  • 200-hour teacher training: For students ready to deepen their practice or teach, our program has graduated 70 + teachers who now teach at Pure and across Calgary.

  • Community events: From workshops and wellness events to our Pilates for a Cause specialty classes, we use the studio to bring people together and give back.

  • Wellness services: Service offerings that support your whole body, alongside your practice.

Voted Calgary's Best Yoga Studio

Pure Hot Yoga has been voted Calgary's Best Yoga Studio in the Top Choice Awards for over 6 years, most recently in 2026. We're proud of it, but the credit belongs to the people who show up: the students who bring a friend, the teachers who care, and the community that keeps growing.
